What is individual therapy?
In individual therapy, the focus is on the development of a one-to-one relationship between the client and therapist. Unlike couples or family therapy, Individual therapy gives clients the opportunity to use the session entirely to themselves; without the interruption and agenda of others.
Is individual therapy right for me?
Individual therapy sessions are recommended for individuals who present with concerns that do not necessarily require the presence of others in therapy. For example, clients who present with social anxiety, health anxiety and other forms of anxiety would benefit from understanding and working on their anxiety by themselves. Individual therapy may also be appropriate for clients with whom are in a relationship and are experiencing difficulties in that relationship, but their partners are not ready for couples therapy.
Therapeutic approach and techniques vary depending on a clients presenting concerns, preferences, culture and NICE guideline. Typically, the objective is symptom reduction and/or personal development. This is achieved when a client engages in a self-reflective process on his or her thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
