COUPLES
THERAPY

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy gives committed partners to critically examine and improve the quality of their relationship. Typically, couples seek therapy to improve their communication pattern; but it can also involve rebuilding trust, particularly in cases where there has been infidelity, triggering resentment and anger in the partner who has been deceived.

Unlike individual therapy, couples therapy involves the therapist, entering the couples way of life more directly. This includes observing how both partners interact with each other and providing unbiased feedback on the kinds of factors that might play a role in the breakdown of the union. In addition to a change in dysfunctional behavioural and communication styles; couples therapy may also focus on decreasing emotional avoidance by helping the couple express their emotions and thoughts more effectively. In doing this, the couple may be able to become closer again.

If you decide to proceed with couples therapy, you and your partner will have a one-to-one session each following your joint couples therapy assessment.

Is couples therapy right for us?

In couples therapy, it is important that both partners are committed to the therapeutic endeavour and attend sessions.
